Although howling is instinctive behavior, huskies have become “extremely social” dogs according to Rebecca Meares-Jones, board member of Texas Husky Rescue, after 10,000 years alongside humans. We have shaped this chatty behavior through positive reinforcement and breeding.
“Howls can reach up to 16 kilometers in the wild, and the sustained sound makes it easier for pack members to find them, so this behavior is essential for their survival. This is a less desirable skill in suburban neighborhoods, but it is still an instinct,” she explained in a conversation with the Daily Paws website.
